Road Name Rules

Maury County 9-1-1 maintains a database for the municipalities of existing and proposed streets in Maury County to prevent duplication of street names. Proposed road names should be submitted to us in writing using our application form.

Engineers/Surveyors submitting a subdivision or land development plan with new streets, a paper copy or digital image of the plan (PDF, JPEG, ETC) should be attached to the road name request.

Road names can be reserved for a period of two (2) years from submission, unless the subdivision project is proceeding throughout those two years in phases.

Municipalities have the final approval for all road names in any subdivision or land development plan within their municipality.

We encourage the use of correct street types to match what type of thoroughfare it is.

Examples:
Court is a dead end, Alley is a narrow lane behind or between buildings, a Boulevard is a street with a median, etc.

Prohibited Usage for Street Names:
  • North, South, East, West, or other directional indicators cannot be used for a road name.
  • Old and New cannot be used.
  • References to a number are prohibited such as Ten, First, Sixth.
  • Abbreviations of words or names and initials are prohibited.
  • A single alphabetical character cannot be used.
  • Duplicate names in its entirety or similar pronunciation will be denied, (Examples: Smith, Smyth, or Smythe; Allen or Alan) regardless of the street type used.
  • Names that may be offensive or contain double meanings will be rejected.
  • Use of complicated words with unconventional spellings will be denied.
  • Do not use special characters in road names such as hyphens, apostrophes, or dashes.
  • Names with the same theme (i.e., flowers, states) are suggested for naming streets in an entire subdivision as a means of general identification
